Do I need a lawyer to buy property in Spain?
A lawyer is not legally required to buy in Spain, but for a foreign buyer it is strongly advisable — an independent abogado checks the registry and contract, handles the NIE and taxes, and represents only you, unlike the notary.
The notary is a neutral public official who authenticates the deed; they do not act for the buyer or run the due diligence for you. An independent lawyer fills that gap.
Avoid using a lawyer recommended by the seller or agent — choose your own, so their duty is to you alone.
